Abstract
Measurement of meternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) originated in the early 1970s as a means to screen for fetal neural tube defects and recently, it has became a standard screen of prenatal care in Korea.
The purpose of this study was to examine retrospectively the clinical significance of maternal weight adjustment in MSAFP.
A total of 1137 patients participated in a MSAFP screening program in Cheil General Hospital between January and December 1991.
Maternal weight adjustment in MSAFP is used the formula from Knight.
The weigh of Korean pregnant women is the most in 45 kg to 64 kg weight group (10%) and the lesser common in above 75 kg weight group (0.9%).
Abnormal results was defined as 0.4 less, or 2.5 or more multiple of the median for gestational age.
The highest rate (10%) of low MSAFP median was obtained in above 75 kg weight group without correction. Conversely, the rate of elevated MSAFP was highest (5.9%) in the below 45 kg weight group without correction.
Conversely, the rate of elevated MSAFP was highest (5.9%) in the below 45 kg weight group.
Lower MSAFP results increased from 2.9% to 3.9% and high MSAFP results decreased from 3.3% to 2.5% in total population according to weight correction.
